Building insulation in history did not have the level of development and variety seen today, but it began with different methods and materials. In early periods, insulation was carried out using simple and natural materials. With the first settlements, materials such as straw, moss (plant fibers), feathers, sawdust, tree bark, and other natural elements were used for insulation purposes. These materials were placed between walls or in roof spaces to help reduce heat loss and noise.
In some ancient buildings, stone and earthen walls themselves provided natural insulation. Such structures helped protect indoor spaces from external temperature fluctuations, creating more comfortable living environments. In different geographical and cultural contexts, materials such as chicken feathers and wool were also used to insulate the interior or exterior of buildings. These materials were preferred to retain heat and reduce the impact of wind.
In some regions, mixtures of clay and reeds were used for wall insulation. This combination naturally helped preserve indoor temperatures. In more affluent cultures, large and thick carpets or floor coverings were used to insulate floors, preventing cold from seeping in and helping retain warmth.
In certain areas, wooden and brick structures also contributed to insulation. In wooden buildings, thick planks or panels were used to protect interiors from external weather conditions.
Historically, insulation was largely limited to natural materials and was far more constrained compared to modern technology and knowledge. However, even in those times, people used various methods to create more comfortable and livable indoor environments. Since there were no advanced insulation materials or techniques, building insulation was generally adapted to local climates and available resources.
It is difficult to identify a single building where modern insulation was first applied, as insulation methods evolved gradually over time. However, significant transformation in building insulation began in the mid-19th century with the Industrial Revolution and technological advancements.
One of the early applications of modern insulation was seen in railway stations and train facilities in the mid-19th century. These large structures with high ceilings required insulation materials to reduce heat loss and improve indoor comfort.
Another early example was the development of window insulation techniques in the late 19th century, where an air layer was left between glass panes to improve thermal performance.
Additionally, in the early 20th century—especially during periods of rising energy costs such as the Cold War era—more efficient insulation methods were researched and developed. During this time, external wall insulation systems became increasingly popular as a modern approach to improving building energy efficiency.
